UM has expertise in mining and geotechnical engineering, mineral processing, building materials and constructions, environmental impact assessment, waste management, waste facilities, circular economy, legal issues related to mining cycle, reclamation and revitalization of degraded areas (industrial/postmining). The vast experience of UM includes conducting scientific and industrial projects including 7 H2020; 14 EIT Raw Materials projects; 2 ERASMUS + projects; 7 projects funded through national operative programmes. UM is also a member of EIT RawMaterials and CEEPUS. Some of the key references include:
- Programme of the European institute for innovation and technology: Knowledge and Innovation Community for Raw materials (EIT KIC Raw materials), Core member;
- Horizon 2020 project Research and Innovation Framework programme: UNEXMIN – Autonomous Underwater Explorer for Flooded Mines (February 2016 to October 2019);
- Horizon 2020 project Research and Innovation Framework programme: ROBOMINERS – Resilient Bio-inspired Modular Robotic Miners (June 2019 to November 2023);
- Horizon 2020 project Research and Innovation Framework programme: CHPM2030 – Combined Heat Power and Metal Extraction (January 2016 to June 2019);
- Operative programme GINOP-2.3.3-15-2016-00024: 3D Lab – Infrastructure for Fine Structure Analysis (March 2017 –August 2019)
